The Oracles of Time

How might we reconsider our experience of time - both singularly and collectively as a community - reaching from the past, through the present, and speculatively into the future? Who might listen and aid us in communicating our thoughts, fears, and desires?

oracle noun or·a·cle | \ ˈȯr-ə-kəl
1 a) a person (such as a priestess of ancient Greece) through whom a
deity is believed to speak
b) a shrine in which a deity reveals hidden knowledge or the divine
purpose through such a person
2 a) a person giving wise or authoritative decisions or opinions
b) an authoritative or wise expression or answer

Each painting in The Oracles of Time series represents a unique and yet familiar singular role. Whether it is The Sentinel, ever watchful, or The Wayfarer, always on the move, each offers a different possibility for reconsidering our understanding of time and our place within it. As a collection, these abstract paintings invite a diverse audience to engage with curiosity, hope, and wonderment.

Many of the works in this series gesture towards past forms of knowledge and ways of communication. At the centre of this collection is a large-scale triptych, titled The Shrine of the Oracles, which endeavours to engage with a speculative future, a safe haven injected with bright joyful colour and energy.

While this body of work emerged as a meditation on the many difficult aspects of isolation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically how our relationship with time was altered, the themes have developed to envelop a broader desire to face challenging situations with hope, community, and sustainability.
